Controlling Cockroaches
Many types of cockroaches can invade your home. Are they able to make you sick, or are they just disgusting? Today, we're going to review some facts about roaches, because understanding them will help a homeowner control them.
Cockroaches shed
In addition to shedding their exoskeleton or skin, cockroaches also leave egg casings, saliva, and fecal matter. Cockroaches will leave these contaminants on effectively every surface in your home. When enough of these contaminants build up, they can even leave behind a musty odor.
If the detritus left by cockroaches are inhaled or ingested by a person with asthma or allergies, it can cause a reaction. It could cause anything from a runny nose, itchy eyes, coughing, hives, sneezing or wheezing. These reactions vary wildly from being mildly uncomfortable to being a full-blown medical emergency.
The main issue is that as soon as cockroaches invade a home, they move about ubiquitously, crawling everywhere, and replicating themselves quickly. This can become a horrible infestation in a small amount of time. Because they're able to crawl on every surface, nothing is protected from these invaders unless it is in an airtight container.
What attracts cockroaches?
Cockroaches are mainly tempted by food, dirty dishes, and water. This is why you will discover them in the sink, pet food, pantry, and any vulnerable packages of food that are airtight. They like to hide in bathrooms when towels are left on the floor and any other place with food or moisture. They are particularly drawn to leaks beneath the sink.
If my house is clean, then why do I have cockroaches?
Cockroaches are drawn by convenience. They will get in through small cracks, vents, or even under doors that aren't sealed well. They can find their way in by hiding in the ridges of cardboard boxes, or in between layers of brown paper bags. Shoes, backpacks, newspapers, purses, and briefcases are all ways cockroaches can show up.
Because cockroaches are nocturnal, they could be living in a home for some time before the owner sees what is happening. There could be egg sacs, fecal matter, or dead cockroaches before the owner sees a living one. Subsequently, when the house has become infested, cockroaches gain the upper hand because they have moved into their breeding cycle.
