The Basics of Florida Termite Prevention

A termite infestation is a nightmare for every homeowner.

A termite infestation is a nightmare for every homeowner. Termites are notorious for causing extensive cosmetic and structural damage to properties. According to an estimate by most environmental agencies, nearly ten percent of Florida homes, at some point, will experience a termite infestation. The warm and humid climate of the state provides an ideal condition for many wood-destroying termite species to thrive. However, dry wood and subterranean are the two most destructive types of termites most commonly found in Florida.

A termite infestation is hard to detect and eliminate. Most homeowners only find it after significant damage. These pesky pests work 24/7 to expand their colonies. Prevention is the only way to avoid costly damages and repairs regarding termites. Homeowners can take various steps to reduce the risk of termite infestation in their homes, including:

Eliminate moisture

Excess moisture attracts termites. The first step towards termite prevention is to take measures to reduce humidity. Inspect the house frequently to spot and fix all leaks quickly, ensure the ground next to the foundation is correctly graded, and ensure proper drainage. Also, avoid water pooling and backup, keep the gutters and drains free of clogs, install a dehumidifier, and keep the basement and crawl spaces adequately ventilated. Finally, seal all cracks and gaps to prevent termites from making their way indoors.

Do regular yard work

Things like rotten stumps, woody bushes, decayed wood, and yard waste attract termites. A messy yard presents all the favorable conditions that can draw termites. Keep the yard clean and well-manicured to prevent termites from causing property destruction. Mow the lawn, trim hedges, remove fallen or dead trees and leftover tree stumps from the yard, and remove any waste material around the yard to make it less attractive to termites.

Ensure the proper distance between soil and wood

Wood components coming in direct contact with the soil often result in termite issues as it provides them easy access to food sources and entry into the building. Maintaining a significant distance between the soil and wood discourages termites from destroying the foundation and the home structure. Keep a minimum of six inches between the ground level and wooden door and window frames and siding. Use stones, sand, and other materials to create a barrier separating soil and wooded areas and prevent termites.

Store firewood properly

Leaving firewood or wood debris inside the crawl spaces or leaning against the foundation attract termites as they provide them with an easy food source and access into the home. Homeowners who store firewood outside should keep it at least 20 feet away from the property upon an elevated platform.

Other essential measures:

  • Declutter the home.

  • Use mulch sparingly. Use pine needles, crushed stones, or pea gravel instead of mulch.

  • Regularly inspect the property to look for signs of termite infestation.

  • Avoid planting trees or shrubs close to wooden structures.
